Based on CRLD’s “Gifts” policy in the Public Policy Manual – Reviewed and Updated January 2020
The Library makes the decision on what happens with donated materials…not the donor. If this policy is not acceptable to the donor, CRLD politely declines the donation.
No conditions may be imposed relating to any donated materials after acceptance by library. Donated materials cannot be returned once accepted by library.
All book and media donations must be free of mildew, mold, and dirt. They should not have excessive spine damage; have missing pages, discs, or covers. Books cannot have water damage. In other words, all material donations must be in pristine condition.
Donated materials requested for library usage MUST be current year, in pristine condition, and not duplication either at CRLD or in the Illinois Heartland Library System.
Children’s books are accepted, and are either sold or used for Library programming such as the annual Books for Treats. The use of children’s books is determined by condition. ( updated 7.30.21)
Donated materials are handled in one of the following ways:
(Updated 8.26.21)
1.) Materials are placed in library’s collection. (This rarely happens due to age, duplication, condition of donated materials, etc.)
2.) Materials are sold at the Friends of the Library book sales.
3.) Materials in poor condition are thrown away.
Library staff can issue a receipt of donated materials, but cannot assess monetary value.
